Definitely NOT for the beginner, but a treasure house to the WordPress pro

Everything about this book screams “NOT FOR BEGINNERS”! The Amazon ad copy clearly states “WordPress guru Thord Daniel Hedengren takes you beyond the blog to give you the tools and know-how needed to build just about anything in WordPress.” Does that make it sound like this is a beginner’s book? In the Introduction, the author says “it is important to remember that this is not a beginner’s book”.
Okay? “Beyond The Blog” is not a beginner’s book. If you want the best book for beginning through intermediate WordPress, get “WordPress For Dummies” by Lisa Sabin-Wilson, now in its 6th Edition.
If, however, you have a decent grasp of HTML, CSS and PHP, this book will help you learn how to make WordPress sit up, stand on its head, dance, turn somersaults and a lot more.
Author Hedengren covers the technical basics of WordPress, the guts that the vast majority of WordPress users don’t – and have no need to – see. The most important chapter here is on “The Loop”, the absolute operational guts of WordPress. I found it enlightening and learned from it.
He then moves into designing and developing WordPress themes (not for beginners), using Plugins with WordPress (approachable in very small part by beginners) and Additional Features, which is definitely not for beginners.
All in all, this is one of the best books on ADVANCED WordPress that I’ve read. But if you are just starting out with WordPress, get “WordPress For Dummies”. If you aren’t familiar with HTML, CSS and PHP, don’t bother with this until you are. But if you know the right set of basics, this book is very much an eye-opener as to what can be accomplished with WordPress.

Well written, concise guide for experienced web developers

Wordpress is a product that allows people with absolutely no programming or web page experience to create blogs and other web sites with ease. If you fit into this category, Smashing WordPress is not for you. If, on the other hand, you are experienced with web design, html, and php, this book unlocks how to use WordPress to build a highly customized site.
Smashing WordPress shows you how to back up your site. It also shows you how to hack the database (learn where everything is). This was particularly helpful to me when I needed to move a site from an old single instance to WordPress network. It also provides good ideas for improving server security.
Much of the book is spent discussing how to code for WordPress. This is the first reference I've actually been able to use to modify the php to support special functions I want. The bottom line is that this is the best technical reference for WordPress I have ever seen.
Beware! This is not for everyday WordPress blog owners. This book assumes you understand programming, site and server management as well as PHP. If you do, you will love this book. I have found it extremely useful in the short time I've had it.

Learning Wordpress for more technically experienced users

The name of this book makes sense if you know what it is all about, but it may not be clear to people looking for "Wordpress 101" books. This is not a book for absolute beginners. It is a book for technically experienced users or power users or developers, who want to understand Wordpress, and are able to get up to speed on their own on topics they may not be familiar with. A basic understanding of Wordpress helps, otherwise you'll have more catching up to do. If you are an advanced Wordpress user, you may find some useful things too, but those appear later on in the book. If you are a casual Wordpress user and want to go deeper and wider, you may find this book very helpful.
This is the 4th edition, 354 pages long. It was written with Wordpress 3.8 in mind. One thing to make clear, this book focuses on the self-hosted Wordpress.org, not on the Automattic hosted Wordpress.com service.
It starts from the beginning (installing Wordpress) and sets the tone for the rest of the book, going in more depth and being more technical than a typical learning Wordpress book. You can see all the topics covered in the table of contents so there's no need to repeat them here. There is an Index at the back but no Appendices. You can use the preview of the paper and Kindle versions to get a feel of the style and technical depth of the book.

The code and diagrams included are almost impossible to read on a 6-inch e-ink screen (even with zooming), so if you are considering the Kindle version, you have to read on a desktop or laptop or a bigger color screen tablet.
